Flicker and moving machinery

Consider temporal light behaviour when dimming and around moving machinery.

Changes in light output over time can appear as flicker or stroboscopic effects. Distorted perception of moving machine parts can be particularly problematic. Good lighting therefore includes the temporal behaviour of the system.

The light source, driver and controls must work together, including when dimmed. For production, workshops and sensitive applications, check available product data and assess lighting under its intended operating conditions.

A claim such as “low flicker” should be supported by appropriate product information and assessment of the intended operation. A particular combination or dimming setting may behave differently from a component considered alone. Evaluate the system and record its configuration. For machinery workplaces, coordinate lighting with responsible specialists and the workplace risk assessment.

What to clarify for your project

  • Request temporal light-behaviour data.
  • Check driver and control compatibility.
  • Consider relevant dimming levels and moving processes.

Remember: Check dimmed operation and the real application, as well as full output.
