IP, IK and protection class: different ratings for different risks

Separate ingress protection, mechanical impact resistance and electrical protection.

An IP rating describes enclosure protection against solid objects and water. The first digit concerns solid-object and dust protection; the second concerns water. These refer to defined test conditions, not unrestricted suitability for any cleaning method or environment.

The IK code describes resistance to mechanical impact. Electrical protection class concerns protection against electric shock. These specifications answer different questions: a high IP rating does not replace appropriate electrical protection or evidence of mechanical suitability.

Temperature, materials, cleaning chemicals and special environmental conditions also matter. A dust-protected luminaire is not automatically suitable for an explosive atmosphere. Connections, seals and installation must preserve the intended protection. For demanding applications, check the precise product variant and manufacturer approvals against the actual conditions instead of selecting by a single rating.

What to clarify for your project

  • Describe dust, water, cleaning and impact exposure.
  • Check material and temperature approvals.
  • Consider the luminaire, connections and installation as a whole.

Remember: Specify IP, IK and electrical protection together with the intended environment.
