Surge protection as part of the system design

Sensitive electronics need coordinated protection. A single equipment rating does not replace assessment of the installation.

Surges can arise from switching events or lightning effects, among other causes. LED drivers, control equipment and communication interfaces should therefore be assessed within the building’s electrical installation. A luminaire’s stated surge withstand rating does not mean the complete system is protected.

The responsible electrical designer reviews existing protective measures, cable routes and interfaces. Data connections may matter alongside the power supply. Required protective devices and their locations depend on the actual installation and applicable rules.

For refurbishment, provide existing drawings and records of previous failures. Also agree how protective devices will be checked and replaced where necessary. The operator needs clear maintenance responsibilities rather than improvised individual measures. Electrical work and selection of protective components belong with a qualified contractor who can assess the installation as a whole.

What to clarify for your project

  • Provide existing records and known fault history.
  • Consider power and communication routes together.
  • Agree inspection and maintenance responsibilities.

Remember: Coordinate protection across the complete installation.
