Repairability requires more than replaceable parts

Accessible components are a starting point. Documentation and suitable spares make repair practical.

A repairable luminaire needs more than removable fasteners. LED module, driver, optics and mechanical parts must be identifiable and technically matched. A replacement that looks similar may differ in current, voltage, distribution or thermal behaviour.

Ask about the replacement process during procurement: which parts are intended for replacement, who may carry out the work and which instructions are available? Settings and software versions can matter too. Agree spare-part availability and conditions explicitly rather than assuming unlimited future supply.

After replacement, function and safety need appropriate professional checks. An asset register containing model, variant and location makes preparation easier. Repair can conserve resources, but its benefit depends on product condition and the work involved. It is an engineering decision rather than an automatic sustainability guarantee.

What to clarify for your project

  • Record components and variants in an asset register.
  • Agree spare-part and replacement arrangements early.
  • Provide for checks and documentation after work.

Remember: Support repairability with records, identifiable parts and a clear process.
