LED lifetime: understanding L80, operating hours and temperature

An hours figure is neither a warranty nor a specification for every component.

LED light output gradually declines with use. An L80 designation describes output retention of 80% of the initial value after the stated operating period under the specified conditions. The statistical basis and manufacturer conditions are necessary for a complete assessment.

Output depreciation and complete failure are different processes. A luminaire can continue operating while no longer providing enough light for its task. A driver may fail before the LED module reaches its expected service period. Lifetime figures should therefore not be read as guaranteed failure-free operation.

Temperature and installation conditions matter. A luminaire beneath a hot warehouse roof faces a different environment from a freely ventilated test sample. Check ambient-temperature limits, heat dissipation and access for maintenance. For long operating periods, establish whether drivers or light sources can be replaced and how spare parts will be supplied.

What to clarify for your project

  • Request the complete lifetime specification.
  • Consider temperature at the actual mounting position.
  • Agree replaceability and a spare-parts strategy before purchase.

Remember: Operating hours, lumen maintenance, failures and warranty are separate specifications.
