Measuring light and commissioning an installation
Measurement grids, operating conditions and records make results meaningful.
One reading directly below a luminaire says little about the whole installation. Define the assessment surface, measurement height and a suitable grid. Avoid sampling only the brightest positions. Use an appropriate illuminance meter and record the measurement conditions.
Daylight, dimming settings, dirt and the position of the person measuring can affect readings. State which operating condition is being assessed. An initial value after installation has a different meaning from a maintained value at the end of a maintenance interval.
Commissioning also checks sensor coverage, delays, daylight control, scenes and manual operation. Document and assess differences from the design. Handover should include luminaire schedules, drawings, settings and maintenance instructions. These records help future replacement and prevent the original design intent being lost during smaller changes.
What to clarify for your project
- Agree measurement areas, grid and operating states.
- Document daylight influence and instrument condition.
- Hand over settings, drawings and maintenance guidance.
Remember: Measurement and functional checks complement one another and both need clear conditions.
