SDCM and binning: consistent light colour
Matching Kelvin values do not guarantee identical colour.
LEDs are sorted by their characteristics. Colour binning groups chromaticity coordinates; SDCM describes their spread. Smaller values indicate tighter tolerances. Colour temperature alone does not fully describe these differences.
Differences are particularly noticeable between adjacent luminaires or on uniformly lit walls. Record colour tolerance alongside colour temperature when planning replacements. This information does not describe how faithfully object colours appear; that requires separate colour-rendering information.
What to clarify for your project
- Record temperature and tolerance.
- Compare neighbouring fittings in a mock-up.
- Keep replacement specifications.
Remember: Specify colour tolerance and replacement arrangements together.
