Include standby energy in lighting controls
Lights that appear off can still consume energy. Many devices and long idle periods make the total relevant.
Electronic drivers, sensors, gateways and power supplies may draw power while waiting. Distinguish between dimmed operation, light off with electronics still powered, and fully disconnected supply. These states offer different functions and consume different amounts of power.
For an annual estimate, multiply each state’s power by its operating hours and include every relevant device. Measurements should cover a representative system and use equipment capable of assessing small loads reliably.
Complete disconnection is not automatically the best solution. Control functions, accessibility, restart behaviour and special requirements such as safety functions must remain appropriate. Compare total system energy with the savings delivered by demand-based control. Clearly recorded operating states make supplier proposals and later measurements easier to compare on a consistent basis.
What to clarify for your project
- Request standby data for the proposed devices.
- Separate operating, standby and disconnected hours.
- Consider restart behaviour and essential functions.
Remember: Include every operating state in the system energy balance.
