Constant Light Output: using output reserves

CLO can compensate for ageing-related lumen loss. It also changes the power profile over time.

Constant Light Output uses a programmed driver function to maintain a planned light output over operating life. This often means starting at reduced power and increasing it later. The actual implementation and available headroom are product-specific.

CLO does not remove every cause of reduced illumination. Dirty covers and changed room surfaces are not automatically accounted for. Maintenance planning and realistic calculation assumptions remain necessary. An uncoordinated maintenance factor can count reserves twice or fail to cover relevant losses.

Financial comparisons should not use the lower initial power for every year. Request the intended power profile, operating hours and maximum condition. Settings need to suit the LED design and planned maintenance interval, and remain recoverable when a driver is replaced. This makes both expected performance and future energy use easier to assess.

What to clarify for your project

  • Request the power profile and limits.
  • Account for dirt separately.
  • Record settings for maintenance and replacement.

Remember: Coordinate CLO, maintenance assumptions and energy calculations.
