DALI and DALI-2: using groups, scenes and sensors effectively
Digital interfaces enable functions; commissioning turns them into useful behaviour.
DALI provides digital communication with lighting devices. Luminaires can be addressed individually or in groups, while scenes store settings for different uses. A meeting, presentation and cleaning routine can therefore use the same luminaires differently.
Components have distinct roles: control gear operates the light output, input devices provide information from buttons or sensors, and an application controller handles the intended logic. Available functions depend on the actual combination and configuration.
DALI-2 is a certification programme with verified test results. Product status can be checked in the DALI Alliance database. A complete installation still needs design and commissioning: groups, sensor assignments, scenes, user controls and behaviour after power restoration are project decisions. Handover should include configuration records, clear responsibilities and understandable instructions for users.
What to clarify for your project
- Specify required functions and user actions.
- Check certification and the exact device capabilities.
- Document groups, scenes and configuration backups.
Remember: A compatible interface is the starting point, not the finished control concept.
