LED drivers and dimming: matching the complete system

Select the driver, LED module and controls as a coordinated combination.

The driver supplies the LED module and affects its operation. Selection depends on the intended current or voltage concept, operating range, power and thermal conditions. A device with a similar wattage is not automatically a suitable replacement.

“Dimmable” is not a complete specification. Define the required interface, such as DALI or an appropriate phase-dimming method. Manufacturer information establishes supported combinations and achievable ranges. Check stability, consistency between luminaires and temporal light behaviour at low output as well as at full power.

Practical behaviour also matters: what happens at switch-on or after a power interruption, and how will replacement drivers be configured? Resolve these questions before ordering. Driver or wiring changes require competent assessment of the luminaire’s original operating and protective characteristics, not just its ability to illuminate.

What to clarify for your project

  • Match driver and module requirements using technical documents.
  • Specify the interface and desired dimming range.
  • Verify switch-on, dimming and replacement-device settings.

Remember: Compatibility and everyday behaviour matter more than the word “dimmable” alone.
