Retail lighting: orientation and product presentation
General lighting and accents serve different purposes.
In retail, general lighting supports orientation while accents highlight selected products. Vertical merchandise displays deserve attention alongside routes and checkouts. Colour temperature and colour rendering influence how materials and finishes appear.
Allow for changing displays. Excessive contrasts or visible bright sources can be distracting. Evaluate typical merchandise under the proposed luminaires and assess the scene from the customer’s viewpoint. High connected power does not measure presentation quality.
What to clarify for your project
- Evaluate real materials.
- Include vertical displays.
- Readjust accents after layout changes.
Remember: Include merchandise and display surfaces in the lighting design.
