Lighting cold stores and refrigerated areas
Low temperatures, moisture and temperature changes create specific demands on equipment and installation.
Labels such as LED or moisture-resistant do not establish suitability for a cold store. Approved operating conditions must cover the complete luminaire, including driver, seals and accessories. Ambient temperature ta and a specified case measurement temperature tc serve different purposes.
Consider transitions as well as steady operation. Open doors, cleaning and temperature changes can introduce moisture and condensation. Fixings, cable arrangements and sensors also need to suit the location. An IP rating alone does not describe all these influences.
Record temperatures, cleaning procedures and operating hours in the project brief. Verify that the proposed luminaire may start and be controlled under those conditions. Include maintenance access and replacement planning so a fault does not require unnecessarily disruptive work in the refrigerated operation.
What to clarify for your project
- Record temperatures including transitional conditions.
- Review drivers, sensors and accessories together.
- Consider cleaning, condensation and maintenance access.
Remember: Obtain approval for the actual temperature and moisture profile.
