Facade lighting without disturbing the surroundings

Architecture can be revealed selectively. Material, viewpoint and light containment need to work together.

A facade changes appearance with its material and lighting direction. Grazing light emphasises texture and irregularities, while a broader wash can look calmer. Define the desired effect, viewing distance and important viewpoints before selecting luminaires.

The illuminated surface also sets a boundary: light should remain where it serves the design. Check windows, neighbouring properties and the space above the building. Shielding, suitable optics and careful aiming can reduce unwanted spill.

Operating times and dimming levels belong in the concept from the start. Not every facade needs unchanged lighting throughout the night. Review local requirements and sensitive surroundings early. A night-time trial using the actual material is especially useful because daytime photographs and screen renderings only partly represent the eventual result.

What to clarify for your project

  • Test materials and important viewpoints.
  • Check windows and neighbouring surfaces for spill.
  • Commission operating schedules and dimming.

Remember: Define the visual objective together with the boundaries of the light.
