Planning Tunable White with DALI DT8

Adjustable colour temperature needs a coordinated LED module, driver and control system.

DALI Device Type 8, or DT8, covers colour control. The Tc colour type is particularly relevant to Tunable White. The label DT8 alone therefore does not confirm support for every desired colour function. Driver, controller and user interface must all support the intended capability.

Design decisions extend beyond minimum and maximum colour temperature. Useful light output, dimming behaviour, preset scenes and recovery after a power interruption also matter. Suitable LED channels and their coordination form part of the luminaire design.

Describe understandable operating scenarios rather than product abbreviations alone. Which setting should appear on entry? Can users adjust colour temperature? Who maintains schedules? A sample installation can show whether colour appearance and transitions suit the room. Adjustable colour temperature by itself does not establish a health benefit.

What to clarify for your project

  • Check DT8 colour type and controller support.
  • Test output and dimming across settings.
  • Document scenes and restart behaviour.

Remember: Specify the intended function across the entire equipment chain.
