Connecting lighting to building automation
An interface connects systems. A clear functional specification makes them work together reliably.
Lighting controls and building automation perform different jobs. A gateway can connect DALI luminaires to a KNX or BACnet system, for example. The commands and feedback actually exchanged depend on the selected device and its configuration.
Define data points and responsibilities before choosing products. Should building automation merely set operating times, switch groups or display faults? Which command takes priority when someone dims locally while a scheduled programme is active?
Communication failure deserves equal attention. Essential local functions should remain available according to the project brief. Agree handover of configuration files, version records and access credentials to the operator. During acceptance, test normal operating cases and restart behaviour with all relevant trades. A protocol name alone is not a complete statement of interoperability; the agreed functions need verification on the installed system.
What to clarify for your project
- List commands and feedback.
- Agree local control and failure behaviour.
- Assign programming and backup responsibilities.
Remember: Define interfaces through actual data points, priorities and acceptance tests.
